Obsession is a micro short story in VN format created for O2A2 2024  with a single illustration (by George Barbier via the Rijksmuseum), one music track, one sound effect and 1k words voice acted by SamGrace .

It includes dyslexia-friendly font options.

Okay, this was such an amazing game!!

First of all, just like last year, I have to say I am in love with the art direction! Using old works of art in a whole new context is very creative! It really helped the game feel atmospheric, especially with the gorgeous music and the amazing voice acting! The writing contributed to the atmosphere!

And for the story itself, I do love the context, how mysterious it is, I loved being able to be more or less wary and suspicious, and to create my own relationship with Her as I progressed in the game. And seeing the Priestess (by the way, amazing choice for the artwork, because, despite the character drawn clearly being from the 20s, I still thought she was indeed very priestess-like) struggle too, devoted to a deserted cult, in an equally deserted temple also added to the metaphor!

Congrats on making this game, your O2A2 entries always are a treat!!

Cutting off the bottom half of the illustration really contributed to the timeless, vague vibe of the game.

This was absolutely beautiful! What a magical feeling... I felt as entranced as the Supplicant themself while playing. From the ethereal music to the gorgeous artwork that feels like stepping into a painting from another time to the beautiful lilt of the voice work that really tied everything together. It was just a gorgeous experience.

I quite enjoyed the final bit where I had to guess the identity of Her... it took me a few times, so I was quite glad for your hints LOL And what a compelling tale, that of uncovering the own obsession plaguing your mind and coloring everything around you so that you no longer see reality...

Ahhhh everything was just so well done! I really enjoyed this. It just felt so absolutely magical!

The original artwork is indeed enchanting—it inspired me right away, and I was so happy to know I could use it in the game! Shoutout to the Rijksmuseum and their open data policy  🙏

I'm glad the hints were effective! I wanted to add more of them, and make them dependent on previous choices, but couldn't because of the wordcount😅 She has three possible names, but the hints only point to one.

Lovely art and an ethereal atmosphere! I especially enjoyed the voice acting, it fits with the game's aesthetic and story well. I didn't have trouble with the font contrast, but the size of it was a bit hard to read in the settings. Is there a way to play the game full screen?

Fullscreen would display a massive border around, so I increased the size of the viewport instead. It will hopefully be enough to improve readability!

Nicely atmospheric! An elegant story.

The only drawback is that the text is a little hard to read because there isn't a lot of contrast between the gray font and the background.

You raised an excellent point about readability 🙏 I played a bit with outlines but nothing really worked, so I decided to make the viewport bigger. It will hopefully mitigate some of the font issues!
